Discovery of Oil and Gas
Qatar is a small country, which made its income from the local fishing and pearl industry but in 1940 oil was discovered off the western coast near Dukhan and this would lead to the huge transformation of the country. The development of this oil field would be delayed until 1949 due to World War 2.
The 1950’s and 1960’s started the boom from oil and Qatar began to build relationships with other countries. Since then people from all over the world have wanted to live and work in Qatar because of the good salaries.
During the 1950’s Qatar became among the top 10 exporters of oil throughout the world and would provide oil for 0.5% of the worlds production. More money has been put into the building of direct oil lines to countries throughout the Middle East and the country has developed its production of liquid gas, which is exported to countries like Japan. Qatar’s oil output has increased and Qatar now boasts the highest GDP (gross domestic product) of any country in the world. Qatar is expanding its oil and gas manufacturing and is also investing heavily in developing other types of fuels.
