Horse Racing
Horseracing plays a major part in Qatari tradition and is also a major social pastime. Horses have traditionally been used as a means of transport but with progression, as with Camel racing, the interest of horses in sport has rapidly developed.
There are major stables throughout the country and Qatar boasts a major Equestrian and Racing Club. Once a week race meetings take place at the National Race track in Doha. There is major interest in the sport across the Gulf region with world-renowned races held in the near UAE city of Dubai.
Qatari’s interest in horse racing is also international and the Qatari Royal Family is both sponsors and regular attendances at major events in both France and the United Kingdom. Some members of the Royal Family attend the race events in Doha and there is a large amount of prize money available for the winning jockey and stable and Jockeys from all around the globe come to take part. Admission is free and spectators have the chance to win many prizes. The racing season runs from October through to May.
